China: Knowns and Unknowns
Over the past decade, the China Centre Tübingen (CCT) has hosted a wide range of activities under the theme of “China Competence”. It has demonstrated how students, scholars, and professionals from diverse fields can draw on their experiences with China to develop field-specific approaches.Yet alongside the pursuit of knowledge, it has become increasingly clear that engaging with the unknown—and learning to navigate uncertainty—is just as essential, especially in a rapidly changing world shaped by recent global events. In 2025, CCT is proud to launch its new project: China: Knowns and Unknowns (China: Wissen und Nichtwissen). It explores not only how knowledge about China is created and shared, but also how individuals–––including experts–––navigate through what remains unknown. Engaging the challeng of confronting ignorance–––the blind spot of our knoweldge–––this project addresses that dealing with uncertainty and unknowns is as essential as acquiring knowledge, especially when dealing with China. China Centre Tübingen is organzing the series events with three approaches:
- scholarly approaches to the unknown
- practical engagements with the unknown
- didactic or pedagogical strategies for addressing the unknown
This project invites reflection on how the boundaries between knowing and not-knowing are shaped by cultural, social, and local contexts through workshops, lectures, and exhibitions. It also seeks to foster a dialogue on how we can learn with and from each other in confronting the limits of our knowledge.
